Increase in Homicides and Femicide Rates in Mexico City

In Mexico City, homicide and femicide rates have risen during Clara Brugada's administration. Comparing 2023 and 2024, the city saw an increase of 5.3% in homicide victims and 14% in femicides.


Increase in Homicides and Femicide Rates in Mexico City

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of victims of intentional homicide and femicide in Mexico City. In 2019 there were 72 victims, in 2020 there were 82, in 2021 it remained at 72, in 2022 there were 76, in 2023 the figure was 61 and in 2024 there were 68 victims.

During Clara Brugada's administration, from October to December 2024, the upward trend in the number of victims of intentional homicide has continued, with an increase of 5.3%, and femicide, with an increase of 14%. In the year 2023, 225 victims of intentional homicide were reported, while in 2024 the number rose to 237.

According to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), in 2024 the crimes of intentional homicide and femicide increased by 5.2% and 11%, respectively, compared to the figures from 2023. In the case of homicide, the number of victims rose from 873 in 2023 to 918 in 2024, while femicides increased from 61 in 2023 to 68 in 2024.

Clara Brugada, head of government of CDMX, reported that in the first 100 days of her administration, there was a 40% reduction in the incidence of intentional homicides, comparing the figures from 2019 and 2024. In the year 2022, affected by the covid-19 pandemic, the lowest number of intentional homicides was recorded with 795 cases. However, in 2023 and 2024, there were increases of 10% and 15%, respectively, in incidence.

Regarding femicide, an increase in victims from 14 to 16 was recorded in the period from October to December 2023 and 2024, respectively. The rates of violence continue to be a cause for concern in Mexico City, where increases in these crimes have been observed in recent years.
